New Rugs!

Ok, ok, these rugs aren't really "new" anymore, I just haven't gotten a chance to post about them. After we finished putting down our new laminate flooring, we decided we needed a few rugs. I always thought people were crazy to pull up their carpet to put down wood or laminate flooring just to cover it up again with carpet rugs, but I totally get it now. Rugs add texture and color and really make the room feel "put together."

The only problem is that rugs are EXPENSIVE! You could really break the bank putting rugs in your house. That is just not something we can fit in our budget right now. There are SOOO many other things I'd rather do around the house for the price of a good rug. Luckily, Ikea has very good prices on rugs. If you are one of those privileged people that live in the same city as an Ikea, I envy you. The closest one to me is in Atlanta. Yep, we drove 6 hours round trip to go to Ikea but this super cute gray rug for $20 that I had been eyeing for years was totally worth it.

I also picked up this rug for my dining room and got all the way home only to realize it's too small. Word to the wise: Always measure your space before driving 6 hours to buy a rug. Guess what? I'm going to leave it there for a while anyway :), don't judge.

While you probably think I'm crazy for going that far out of the way for rugs, we did at least make an adventure out of it!
This little gem is called the Food Truck Park (this would be such a cool job) The weather was a little cloudy and blah the day we went but they still had a few art vendors and a brass band playing while we ate. I had BBQ tacos from The Blackican and they were AMAZING.

If you're ever in Atlanta on a sunny afternoon, you definitely have to check out the Food Truck Park. (I've also been to a pretty awesome one in Austin, TX)

Thrifty Thursday - English Transferware

Happy Thursday! I wanted to share with you some of the of the little treasures that I picked up this weekend. I just had to take a break from boring statistics homework and make some time to hop around a few antique malls here in town.

I have been wanting to start a collection of red English Transferware. I love the traditional blue but red is much more my style.  I found this set of two complete place settings for $25! What a STEAL!
This pattern is

ROMANTIC ENGLAND-RED by MEAKIN, J & G.

According to Replacements.com, the dinner plates should retail for $22. I can't wait to stumble across a few more plates so that I can display these on my table.
Here is a close up of the dinner plates.

And a close up of the salad plate.

I also found these precious little birds for $8. I couldn't resist. I was going to buy Dave a bobble head bulldog untill I ran across these. Oops! ;) These are going to look so cute with my Easter decorations.

Giveaway - Laughing Cow

It's almost the end of February  how are those New Years Resolutions going? If yours is to loose weight or just eat healthier and you need some new inspiration, check out one of my favorite snacks, Laughing Cow cheese wedges. I love these little wedges of happiness. Cheese is definitely one of my weaknesses. I love them so much that I asked the people at Laughing Cow to let me share them with you! To my surprise, they sent me two rounds for myself (thanks!) and are giving away two rounds to not one, but two of my readers!

Here are the ones they sent me. I use the swiss regularly but the garlic and herb was new for me. I love garlic so I really loved this one.

My current favorite way to enjoy laughing cow is on a smart bagel. A wedge and a bagel for breakfast is only 5 weight watchers point!

Laughing Cow is also great for sandwiches. I used just one swiss wedge for this 6pt+ buffalo chicken sandwich. Check out their website for more great recipes!

I can't wait to hear what you make with your free Laughing Cow wedges!

Five Home Projects for Your Income Tax Refund

Tax season is officially in high gear. We have decided to do some work on our house every year with our tax refund. Some years it will be minor and other years it will be a big project. This year we are buying a new refrigerator  (You know you're officially an adult when you get excited about a new refrigerator)
Here is a photo of one like we are getting:
We currently have the smallest freezer known to man, so I'm pretty excited about this huge freezer.

What are you doing with your tax refund? Need some ideas? Check out the ideas below from guest blogger Rich Missey!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every year, the kids get more and more excited as December approaches. Their faces light up on Christmas Day as they unwrap new gifts from family and Santa. For the adults, that expectation may turn to dread as the bills pile up and income tax season rolls around. We type away at online forms, gather up paper receipts for an accountant, or just hand everything to a spouse and go grab a bottle of wine.

Admit it, you've done it!

If you're one of the lucky ones that will be getting a refund check this year, here are some home projects that you can tackle once the money comes in.

  1.  Save it. The best approach for smaller refunds is to use it as a savings fund starter. Identify what you really want to accomplish, how much you can save each pay period, and use the income tax refund to kick off your savings. It's mentally much easier to save when you have more money in your savings to start with.
  2. Pay off bills. Yes, this can be considered a home improvement project. Paying off (or paying down) high interest bills puts more money in your bank account over time, which makes it easier to plan larger projects over time.
  3. Paint. With less than $100 and some elbow grease, you can remake a room in a day. You'd be amazed what a new coat of paint on the walls can do for a room. Don't forget the accents! If your baseboards are painted, repaint or at least scrub them. Brighter or lighter colors can make a room feel bigger than darker, more light absorbing colors.
  4. Accessorize. The right accessories give a room personality and can add to the illusion of size. Mirrors and pictures, or any reflective surface, can help make a room look larger than it is. Also, be sure that there's not too much in a room. There can be a fine line between "lived in" and "Next time, on Hoarders…"
  5. Room remodels. If your refund is really good, you might be able to afford a remodel. This might be all new kitchen appliances and counters, bathtubs and vanities, or bedroom sets. Coordinate the new items with existing colors or completely change the theme of the room with new flooring and paint.

If you find yourself grumbling at this list because you ended up owing Uncle Sam once the dust settled, now is a time to evaluate your weekly payroll deductions. An extra $25 per paycheck each period will hurt a lot less next
year than a single big tax bill.
